Dear Ali,

Thanks for the reminder from Rumi! Of the poets Baha'u'llah quotes, he quotes The Mawlana most. As a young Baha'i in a rainy little northwestern town in the U.S., I had to learn to understand Baha'u''llah, His Quranic references and His occasional references to the great Persian poets, more or less on my own. Naturally, I became a fierce lover of Rumi and Hafez. This effort to comprehend something far beyond me was a significant education.

Life would so pale, so unfragrant if I did not have the references I learned (albeit, from translation) from the great Persian poets.

Great essay. I look forward to reading the next part.

Just is definitely what the Baha'is in Iran need - and by justice I mean justice that meets international human rights standards, not the twisted and cruel "justice" of the mullas and the current regime in Iran.

Bravo Mr. Nafisi! Please "pollinate" with your pen the minds of the spiritualy dead so that their senses can be awakened to smell the sweet scents of Baha'u'llah's healing message for humanity.

Hello sb, thank you for your kind comments. When we Iranians find something great we brag about it to everyone! The time has come for everyone who says Allah'u'Akbar (God is Great) to expand their knowledge of God and say God is Glorious (Allah'u'Abha). As Rumi had said " The 'I' is an illusion. God alone is real."

I owe this excellent essay a good long study. I am in agreement with Mr. Nafisi . . .justice is what humanity is lacking . . .everywhere, not just in Iran.

As a citizens of one world, we need to stop blaming and shaming and fix our problems with new ideas, new awareness and new understanding. Thanks for this thought-provoking essay.

"We are ashamed " is easily to transport and understand in public, describing 160 years of tabooing "to mention" an oppressed part of iranian society based on religious prejudice.
To be ashamed is a breakthrough of understanding, even though a passive condition which long for action.
Mr Nafisis approach " ‘We arise to defend the rights of Baha’is’" brings the public breakthrough of understanding into an active engagement to defend the rights of the oppressed Baha'is as acts of selflessness and courage . The example for it in todays Iran is Shirin Ebadi . A Lioness who earns already a historical place in the world of action.
