- PM underlines concern for Iran’s Bahá’ís at historic meeting with Bahá’í delegation

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has underlined the UK government’s concern over the seven Bahá’í leaders being detained in Iran.Mr Brown’s remarks were made at a meeting which took place this afternoon at the Prime Minister’s office in the Houses of Parliament, attended by Lembit Öpik, MP for Montgomeryshire – who is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Friends of the Bahá’ís group – and a delegation of three Bahá’ís, including two members of the national governing council of the Bahá’í Faith in the United Kingdom.
It was the first ever meeting between a UK Prime Minister and representatives of the Bahá’í community, which was established in Britain in 1898.
The prisoners – five men and two women – were arrested in spring 2008. Prior to their arrest they were members of an informal committee looking after the affairs of Iran’s 300,000 strong Bahá’í community, the country’s largest non-Muslim religious minority. Charges against the seven have been reported in government-controlled mass media as “espionage for Israel”, “insulting religious sanctities” and “propaganda against the Islamic republic”. A further accusation of “spreading corruption on earth” has also been cited.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for publishing this story. It is a remarkable demonstration that the light of the Baha’i Faith can never be extinguished. This is the Day that shall not be followed by night! The Promised Day is Come!

No doubt that British “care” about Iranians!!
“Mosaddeq was an author, administrator, lawyer, prominent parliamentarian, and politican, famous for his passionate opposition to foreign intervention in Iran. He is most famous as the architect of the nationalization of the Iranian oil industry,[3] which had been under British control through the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), (later British Petroleum or BP), and which is thought by many to be the reason for his deposition.Mosaddeq was removed from power in a 19 August 1953 coup supported and funded by the British and U.S. governments and led by General Fazlollah Zahedi.”

Secular jaan,
mosaddeq was PM for two years and mollahs were dissatisfied with him and didn’t want him. Iran’s problems are not caused by British, Jews, Americans, Russians, Baha’is, Portugese, Chinese, Gangis Khan, Taymoor Lang, Islam, Arabs, Alexander, spare parts for air lines, trains, cars, traffic lights, construction equipment, books, pens, authors, news papers, Twitter, yahoo, apple, Nokia or Tupolves. Iran’s problems are all caused by Iranians blaming every thing or everyone under the sun except themselves for their failures. The attitude that Iranians never make mistakes and it’s always some “outside” force that from Alexander to Ahmafinejad has caused all our problems, IS the main cause of our problems. The day we Iranians accept this fact is the day Iran will become free. Until then escapegoating others won’t get us out of the centuries old historical hole we’ve put ourselves in. The first rule of recovery is to stop digging, blaming and escapegoating others. - SecularIranian | July 18th, 2009 - 11:06 am
Ali jan,
I did NOT say that what is happening in Iran, is because of British.I did NOT blame it on British either.I simply said that British CARES only about oil resources!
Today we know who were very good friends of UK during Qajar ;-) - Pejman | July 21st, 2009 - 8:51 pm

I totally agree with you. It’s a long time that Iranians blame everybody and everything but themselves. They also expect freedom and democracy as a gift from those who have been blamed.
